Castle Craig Hospital was founded in 1988 by Dr Margaret Ann and Peter McCann, the first treatment centre to bring the 12 Step addiction treatment programme to Scotland. We are a private addiction treatment hospital providing medically managed detoxification, psychotherapy and dual-diagnosis treatment for those with acute alcoholism, drug dependency, gambling addiction and behavioural addictions.

We provide compassionate care by treating the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the disease. The hospital and its staff are committed to offering skilled professional medical, nursing and therapeutic services to patients and their families, and to treat all those in our care with compassion, dignity and respect. Our staff are dedicated to assisting those who seek our help to achieve stable abstinence, empowering them, so they may enjoy a fulfilling, sober, meaningful and productive life in recovery.

Admission criteria

  • Must have a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder V or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder IV diagnosis of alcohol or drug dependence or another addiction such as gambling addiction.
  • Must be aged 16 years or older (no maximum age). Those under 18 will be assessed if there are concerns as to their ability to adjust to treatment.
  • Must be capable of self-care.

  • Must have a Body Mass Index of at least 16 -17 in the case of a history of eating disorders.

  • Must have adequate command of English to benefit from treatment.

What model(s) of rehabilitation do you practise?

We practise a 12 Step addiction treatment programme with evidence-based therapies and medically managed detoxification, which is supported by therapeutic community and intervention.

Do you have staff members with lived experience on your team?

Yes, approximately 80% of our therapy team have lived experience and are in recovery themselves.

What are your considerations around religious beliefs?

We admit patients from a number of different countries, religions and beliefs. We have an on-site chapel with weekly pastoral visits from a Catholic priest and a Church of Scotland minister, and we facilitate attendance at local mosques and temples when needed.

Our catering staff are trained in the provision of specialist diets, and the admissions process elicits and records whether there is a requirement for vegetarian, vegan, coeliac, gluten-free, halal diets, plus any allergies.

We provide patient literature appropriate to the 12 Steps in Islam.

What funding models are available?

Treatment is funded through a number of pathways, including private funding, medical insurance, NHS, Change Grow Live, ISOS International, and NHS Practitioners.
