Phoenix Futures is a charitable provider of substance use services providing support services across community, prisons, residential and housing settings. Founded in 1969 on a passion for showing that recovery from drugs and alcohol is possible. We have been successfully supporting people to achieve long term recovery for more than 30 years in Scotland and for over 55 years across the wider UK.

Admission criteria

The Aberdeen dispersed residential rehab service offers a flexible and supportive recovery model, consisting of two core elements: our Dayhab (quasi-residential) service, which provides structured recovery support, and our recovery housing, which offers stable, substance-free living for those who need additional housing assistance. This approach allows people to access comprehensive rehabilitation whilst having the choice to stay in their own home or benefit from our housing services, depending on their personal needs.

The service is situated in Aberdeen city centre and offers a structured psychological treatment model but with a key difference: participants can stay in their own homes or access our recovery accommodation across the city.

We provide support to all adults aged 18-65. In some circumstances, we may be able to offer support to 16–18-year-olds.

In our Aberdeen dispersed residential service, we make it clear that an abstinence goal is required for all those entering treatment, and our tenancy agreements stipulate that individuals are not permitted to use drugs or alcohol in our flats. We understand that, due to the different elements of the service, individuals will be at various stages of recovery, but we do not permit the use of illicit drugs or alcohol – both the Dayhab and Recovery Housing elements of the service are drug and alcohol-free environments.

We understand that while accessing our service individuals may be detoxing in the community, on a substitute prescription or prescribed certain medications for alcohol dependency. We will support individuals to reduce and come off this medication by the time they move on from our service. Treatment start dates and lengths will take this into consideration.

Due to our Scottish Government grant funding, this service is currently limited to Scottish residents until March 2026.

What model(s) of rehabilitation do you practise?

We practice a Therapeutic Community Model of support. The programme promotes change by developing self-worth and personal responsibility and challenging individual attitudes and behaviours.

We offer a comprehensive treatment programme within a therapeutic community setting, providing a range of health and social care services to suit the individual needs of each community member. This community is designed to encourage the development of life and social skills through engagement in daily work and activity routines. Additionally, structured group work embraces Cognitive Behavioural Therapy methods as well as behavioural role play therapy.

At the heart of the therapeutic community is peer support. Community members help and nurture each other as they move through the programme. Working together and taking responsibility for the smooth running of the house provides a safe, supportive and structured environment where community members are able to look at the underlying reasons for their substance use and develop the skills necessary to live drug- and alcohol-free lives.

Level of family support offered by your rehabilitation service

The Dayhab service does not typically offer family visits as individuals access this element of the service during the day. However, from point of referral we will ask if an individual would like their family member/loved one to be involved in their care and will revisit this throughout the treatment journey.

The Recovery Housing component of the service does allow for visits. Staff must be notified of any visitors, and this will be risk assessed. We ask that children and young people visits are scheduled for hours when the service is staffed.

Access to family support can be facilitated through external partners such as Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD), Al-anon UK and others. Monthly face to face family support groups are hosted within the service at Regent Quay and there is an opportunity for families to join the virtual family support group at our Glasgow residential service.

Service users also have the opportunity for family to provide input into their loved one’s Phase Reviews (every 3 months).

Pre-rehab support

Individuals that are referred to the service receive pre-admission support and are provided with telephone and/or virtual support from our staff team. Visits to the service are encouraged and supported where possible. The service works closely with existing pre-admission services to ensure support and information is provided before admission.

Before admission, Phoenix Futures staff will work with the individual and their community workers to assess the individual’s needs, risks, and expectations of the admission.

  • A comprehensive assessment will be completed by a Phoenix Futures member of staff, which will include information about current drinking history, illicit medication or drug use, physical and mental health needs and family and social history.
  • A risk assessment and management plan (RAMP) will be completed by a Phoenix Futures member of staff and will include information about risk to self and others.

We do not provide detox in our dispersed residential service. For those that require a detox we will support:

  • Individuals who are going through a community detox
  • Individuals who have been discharged from In-Patient detox

Individuals receiving OST will be considered for our recovery housing/core programme, with the expectation of achieving abstinence within the six-month treatment period. We will collaborate closely with the Integrated Drugs Service to implement a safe and achievable reduction plan.

We will work in partnership with the Integrated Drugs Service to ensure that any reduction or stopping of OST treatment is closely monitored, supporting both abstinence and long-term recovery.

Individuals will be supported post-detox, including relapse prevention techniques and a range of recovery focused treatments. These criteria are not absolute – each case will be assessed and clinical judgement made considering the risks and benefits for each person.

Individuals that are not suitable for a community detox and our dispersed residential service should be considered for treatment elsewhere, which may include Phoenix Futures’ residential services – Rae House or Glasgow – which both offer medically monitored detox. Parents and/or pregnant persons may also be considered for our Scottish Specialist Family Residential Service at Harper House.

Aftercare provision

We have an aftercare programme that is delivered at our dispersed residential service and is a dedicated support pathway for graduates of the core programme, our residential rehab service in Aberdeenshire (Rae House), and other residential services designed to support sustained recovery, independence, and personal growth. We provide the following services:

  • Aftercare and Peer Support Groups
  • Peer Mentoring and Leadership Opportunities
  • Access to Recovery Accommodation
  • Employability and Skills Development
  • Community and Social Integration

This programme ensures graduates remain connected, supported, and empowered as they transition into independent living while staying engaged in the recovery community.

Funding model

Until March 2026 the service is fully funded by the Scottish Government with Housing Benefit supporting with rent costs in the housing element of the service. Prison to Rehab referrals can be accepted and we are currently working on becoming a named service on the Scottish Government’s Prison to Rehab Protocol.

Building accessibility requirements

Regents Quay is fully accessible throughout. A lift provides access to all floors, and a stair lift on the ground floor supports access across the entire level.

Experience of supporting residents with medical conditions

We can provide support to people with mental health and or physical health needs. Mental health needs are subject to assessment except in following instances:

  • We are unable to accept clients with current high mental health needs who are not engaging with mental health support and presenting in crisis
  • We are unable to accept adults that do not have capacity under the Mental Health Act

Physical health needs are subject to assessment except in following instance:

  • We are unable to accept clients who have complex health needs including those requiring Activities with Daily Living (ADL) support or nursing care
  • We are unable to accept clients with significant cognitive impairment or severe learning difficulties

Consideration around religious beliefs

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive service committed to ensuring an equality of access to treatment. Everyone is welcome to join our supportive therapeutic community, and our staff are culturally aware and sensitive to diverse needs. Should anyone require support to access a place of worship, Phoenix Futures have established links with local faith-based groups and community members often attend a diverse range of venues. Dietary considerations will be taken into account and should be explained through the assessment process. Everyone should have the opportunity to state ‘I have specific needs……’ and have these included in their Care Plan.

Quality assurance requirement

The service is registered with the Care Inspectorate for both elements since February 2025; Phoenix Futures Dayhab Service (CS2025000087) and Phoenix Futures Recovery Housing Service (CS2025000069). We have not yet been inspected.
